The room is only half the job. Building rules, elevator time, hallway turns, and truck access can decide whether an apartment cleanout runs smoothly.

Ask the building before choosing a time

Confirm move-out hours, elevator reservations, wall or floor protection, loading-zone rules, door access, and certificate requirements. A crew cannot override building policy on arrival.

Reserve enough time for setup and the trip from unit to truck. A short elevator window may not fit a multi-room cleanout.

Measure the route, not only the furniture

Measure the item, unit door, elevator door, elevator interior, and the narrowest hall turn. Note stairs between the unit and loading area. Disassembly can help with some furniture, but do not assume every item is designed to come apart safely.

Photograph tight corners and tell the provider whether parking blocks the entrance or loading dock.

Separate building property from unit contents

Label appliances, fixtures, window treatments, and furniture that belong to the building or new tenant. Written authorization matters when a manager coordinates removal after move-out.

Keep keys, fobs, remotes, and mail out of the removal area. Return them through the building’s normal process.

Access checklist

  • Elevator reservation and protection confirmed
  • Loading area and vehicle height checked
  • Door codes, keys, and on-site contact ready
  • Large items measured through the full route
  • Removal authority documented
